As Maine police intensify their search on Thursday for the suspect, numerous government buildings, local school districts, and universities in the southern part of the state are temporarily closed. Authorities strongly advise residents in the affected area to remain at home or seek shelter.

Here is a partial list of closures in the region.

  • Bates College in Lewiston canceled classes for Thursday. The school, where students have been in shelter since Wednesday evening’s reported shooting, has received authorization to transport students from academic and administrative buildings to their campus residence halls, according to a college official.

  • Public schools in the towns of Gray and New Gloucester, located south of Lewiston, are closed.

  • The University of New England in Biddeford and Portland as well as the University of Maine in Machias and Orono have temporarily closed their campuses. Bowdoin College has canceled in-person classes but offers faculty members the option to conduct classes online.

  • All municipal buildings and programs in Lewiston are temporarily closed. In Auburn, just across the river, City Hall is also closed, and the CityLink bus system servicing both cities is suspended.

  • Numerous schools, day care centers, recreational facilities, and municipal buildings in various towns and cities across southern Maine, including Augusta, Portland, Vassalboro, and Wells, have announced temporary closures.
